- As someone with a very active sweet tooth, I always need to end the day with dessert. Sometimes a simple scoop of ice cream will do, but occasionally I crave something a bit more homemade feeling.

Still, I don’t want to go to a lot of effort or use a bunch of dishes that I’ll have to wash when it’s only me eating it. So when I found this simple microwavable apple crumble recipe, I was excited to try it — and it’s now in regular rotation on my dessert roster.

Usually apple crumble recipes involve a lot of peeling, chopping, and measuring — and then you have to bake it until the apples are soft and the crumble is golden brown, which could take a half hour or more.

By then, I’m ready for bed. Luckily, this microwavable apple crumble is not just tasty, it’s quick: It takes less than 10 minutes to whip up. Here’s how to make it.

How to Make Microwavable Apple Crumble
This recipe comes from fitness trainer Rachel Dillon, and calls for just four ingredients.

First, dice a whole apple into half-inch pieces (and you can leave the skin on). Any type of apple works for this, so use whatever you prefer — Granny Smith, Fuji, Gala, etc.

Place the diced apples in a mug, then add a teaspoon of lemon juice and a tablespoon of water. Put the mug in the microwave and zap for 90 seconds, until the apples begin to soften.

In a small bowl, use your fingers to mash one tablespoon of softened butter with a single-serve packet of instant oatmeal. (Dillon uses the brown sugar-flavored variety.)

Once the mixture resembles a crumb topping, sprinkle it on top of the apples. Microwave another 90 seconds, and it’s ready to serve.

When I tried this myself, I was really surprised at how it easily it came together. The apples were tender and the crumble was soft. I’ll probably add a dollop of whipped cream next time for a cool, creamy counterbalance to the crumble.

This recipe would work with other types of fruit, too. I can’t wait to try it out using a pear or mixed berries next time I want to use up what’s in my fridge.

This apple crumble is just one of many dessert ideas you can recreate any day of the week. Take a look at our other recipes for decadent Oreo mug cake, three-ingredient creme brûlée, and fluffy chocolate mousse. Yum!
